Review: Torn the Fuck Apart - Sexually Transmitted Torture

Torn the Fuck Apart is admittedly a pretty damn sick band name. The four member within the group have been slaughtering the Kansas City area for ten years now, however their previous efforts have gone largely unappreciated. Their third LP, Sexually Transmitted Torture, features a small line-up change that sees the original vocalist Jeremy Langner replaced by guitarist/new vocalist Michael Langner. Along the way, the material features some guest vocalists from Jeffery Sisson of Troglodyte, STephen Babcock of Diskreet/Gornography and Adam Mitchell of Hammerlord.

If one thing can be said for certain about Sexually Transmitted Torture, it's that the material contained within is drastically diverse and technical. It's easier to name the genres that don't make an appearance somewhere within the unpredictable, spastic labyrinthine compositions. The listener will find themselves enjoying a gushing assortment of techniques, twists and turns for the entire duration of the content. One of the bigger downfalls of the material is that a good serving of the drum composure are triggered double bass kicks, which fills much of the backdrop of the album. Drum triggers are becoming increasingly popular among newer releases, and while it's an efficient technique when used in small doses unfortunately the content here relies on it too often.

While audiences can expect to be treated to a heaping serving of complexity, there's a method to the madness embedded within the grounded framework that encloses the excursions; ensuring that there's no excess overflow leaking into the tight knit crevices of the compositions. Amidst the guitar sweeps, hammer ons, pull offs, tapping, fevered bass lines and precise drum timing are well orchestrated melodic and groove structures that bring a needed simplified break to the album. Much of the content is an eviscerating wave of changing tempos and rhythms, the band rarely rest on any given composure for more than twenty or thirty seconds at a time. "Digested Genitalia" uses abrupt rests to drive a hammering sensation into the cranium of the listener and it's the only song to feature a shit inducing breakdown, while "Autopsy of a Cunt" promotes an elongated assortment of technical guitar and bass work.

The more melodic efforts are dispersed in small portions across the material. "Sulfuric Semen Skank Dunk Tank" is equipped with one of the more groove centered rhythm conglomerations, it also soon thereafter breaks down into a mellow, clean interlude before ferociously erupting back into chaos. The title track, "Inserted Vaginal Castration Device" and "I Can't Believe She Got in the Van with Me" have equally brief melodic segments that stand out as a mention, the tamer sections of these tracks take on a cleaner distortion as the jazzy, neo-classical instrumentals surprise the listener; the difference between them is night and day.

The best release by Torn the Fuck Apart yet, their third full-length effort proves that the band as a whole possess essential and strongly unique composition writing skills. Sexually Transmitted Torture doesn't give a fuck who it offends, and it will take the audience through audible torture chambers and depravities from hell, all the while allowing for brief moments of peaceful deception. If you're in the mood for some untested formula, then this is the album for you.
